Twitter? Never heard of it…, want a beer?

There’s a weird contradiction surrounding Twitter. If you’re a heavy user, most of your social life consists of the conversations on the microblogging service. Yet when you go to a random bar, nobody in there knows about the damn tool. It’s everything and nothing at the same time.

Now let’s think of a your blog as a bar. The percentage of people knowing about Twitter is probably somewhat higher than in an average bar – yet most of your readers still aren’t convinced about the so-called vanity tool. At least, that’s what I expect considering the estimation that Twitter only has a few million users.

So let’s give these potential Twitter users a hand. It’s a waste that these folks don’t have access to the advantages of Twitter. Let’s move some of the Twitter conversations to your blog.

Link to Twitter conversations in your comments

It isn’t an uncommon habit for Twitter users to respond to a blog article by posting a comment on their Twitter timeline – often with a link to your blog post. Nothing wrong with that, as is means more traffic for your blog. But people who don’t follow the users miss out on all the discussion fun.

So here’s an idea: post a comment on your blog consisting of a short summary of the reactions on Twitter. This has at least two important advantages:

• Readers get a better idea of the discussion outside your blog. More discussion often means more value
• People who don’t use Twitter see good examples of the usefulness of the microblogging service. When they’re convinced and join Twitter: guess who will be the first one they’ll start following.
