Want to strike gold? Combine new technologies with old quality standards
5 May 2009Now that the whole world seems to have adopted services like Twitter and Facebook, I feel it’s time to go back to some old standards. We all want to differentiate from competitors. Some of the techniques that were revolutionary a while ago – and thus helped us to differentiate – are pretty normal now. I think we strike solid gold when we combine new technology with old quality standards.
That’s why I wrote earlier how killing certain press rules and adopting others makes you a high profile blogger.
So here’s list. On the left are the values that come with web 2.0. On the right are some old values which we should adopt again.
- Quick news ,,be the first” -> analysis, offer context
- Collect friends and followers -> inspire a small group (so they’ll tell others about you)
- Be everywhere (Twitter, Plurk, Friendfeed, Pownce etc etc) -> choose your network (see above)
- (Micro)blog every blurp -> only publish when it’s interesting and entertaining for others
- Innovate -> help others to understand the digital revolution
This list is just the beginning. I hope you can make it longer by suggesting some old values which should be restored in all their beauty.

This one also still apllies: ‘Watch trends closely and see if you can hop on an upcoming curve.’
I definitely agree Roel. I sort of accidentally hopped on the ,future of journalism’-curve. Which curves have you hopped on lately? Or do you have any examples from recent years?
I hopped on the mobile marketing curve, and it’s been a great ride so far ;)
You can say that again! When you have time and feel like it, you should definitely write a post on how that all worked out. It’s a rather fascinating and inspiring story.
